Prompt inspired poem from “The Daily Spark, p.99:” Miniature Life. Pick an object that holds metaphorical meaning for you, and write a poem about it.

It was shaped like a flower
A round box with solid petals
Blue
Soft
Heavy enough
So that it was easy to believe
That and entire world
Existed inside
And unfurled
When I pulled the string
That made the melody ring.
I imagined a small bear
Suddenly summoned there
From chambers unknown
Within his flower home

Already clad in tuxedo
Like a seasoned little maestro
He approaches the piano
And begins to play gently
The one melody
His invisible master requested
Day after day

I think he enjoyed it
And I cherished every note
As I held the flower tenderly
Ever so grateful
Even at the tender age of five
Or was it six Maybe

Brahms' Lullaby spilled forth
The string retreating with every note
I pulled it again
Hoping that my tiny friend
Would not mind

Already at that age
I had dismantled many toys
To understand the mechanics
To discover the tricks
But never this one
Home to a minuscule bear
Who made music

He might be lonely, I thought
He might want to play
But he needed to know he was safe
And so I gently pulled the string
Many times, every day
Like a bell at his door
And he sat at the piano
Knowing that for a moment

He would be held
And loved
By a child, listening
